GRANITE
Granite is an igneous rock, meaning that at one time during its development, it was melted like volcanic lava. Unlike lava, however, this melted rock never reached the surface. It remained trapped inside the earth, where it slowly cooled and crystallized, resulting in a very uniform, speckled stone that ranges in color, from black and gray tones to pinks, browns, reds, greens and whites.
Granite is striking with its magnificent cluster of color as well as its functionality and durability. These traits make granite ideal for kitchen countertops, accent islands, bar tops, everyday dining tables and many other uses that warrant hard use.
- Nearly impossible to scratch
- Accepts hot pots and pans
- Will not stain under normal use
- Does not harbor bacteria
- Not affected by citric acid, coffee, tea, alcohol, wines, etc.
- Generally lasts forever
MARBLE
Marble is a metamorphic rock. It was once limestone, but over time, the combination of intense heat and pressure caused the limestone to re-crystallize. Foreign substances often enter the stone during this process, creating an infinite variety of colors, textures and veining.
Marble is the most elegant and luxurious of all stones. Its beauty will
last for generations to enjoy. It is versatile enough for use throughout
the home, in projects such as fireplaces, ornamental furnishings,
walls, and windowsills. Marble shines best in the bath. You can
use it on almost any surface, including vanities, shower walls,
tub decks, and flooring. - Not in the kitchen, it will not
hold up to scratches and stains as well as granite.
LIMESTONE / TRAVERTINE
Limestone is a sedimentary rock, mainly composed of the
mineral calcite. The primary source of the calcite is usually marine
organisms, which settle out of the water column and are deposited
on the ocean floors. This stone has a smooth surface and has many
uses throughout the home, although it is more fragile than
marble or granite. - its basically the same as Travertine - we have
Travertine NOT Limestone.
ONYX
Onyx is an agate-like stone often translucent with a layered
appearance. It is formed in cold mineral springs by a process known
as calcite precipitation. Due to its transparency, it is usually
installed on a white setting material to retain its rich, vibrant
color.- we do not stock it, but we can fabricate it.
SOAPSTONE
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that is known for its rugged durability. It is a dense stone that we carry, and as a result it is heat proof and will never stain, even without being sealed. These qualities make soapstone ideal for durable kitchen tops, chemistry lab tops, and other areas where extreme durability is required.
The stone is found naturally in various shades of gray, but after
treatment with mineral oil, it changes into darker shades - we
do not stock it or fabricate it.
SLATE
Slate is composed of muscovite and chlorite, and although durable, is soft in its hardness. Usually in green or black colors. Wear and tear is typically apparent on the peaks or high spots of the surface. It is most suited to outside paving and does not make a good choice for kitchen countertops (hygiene and maintenance issues) - we do not stock it or fabricate it.
